Does AI voice sound human yet?

Last checked 2026-08-14

In short

For narration, usually - listeners do not notice a good synthetic narrator reading well-written copy. For performance it does not: sarcasm, grief, comic timing and two-person dialogue remain audibly synthetic, and the giveaway is rhythm rather than timbre. The reliable workaround is to act the line yourself and convert it to the voice you want.

Where the seam shows

  • Rhythm. Synthetic speech is metrically too even; humans rush the unimportant half of a sentence.
  • Emphasis. A machine stresses the grammatically likely word, not the one that carries your meaning.
  • Reaction. In dialogue, nobody is listening to the other voice, so the turns do not overlap or hesitate.
  • Laughter and tears. Not modelled at all in any of these engines - do not try.

This is why the honest answer depends on the format: a documentary narrator reading clean copy passes, a two-hander does not. Written copy that would sound stiff read by a person sounds worse read by a machine, so fix the script first.
