Can AI voices express emotion?

In short
Not reliably from text alone - which is why so many demos use the same upbeat register. The dependable route is speech to speech: record yourself delivering the line with the feeling you want and convert it to the target voice, which keeps your timing and emphasis and changes only the timbre.
What you can get from text alone
- Pace - slower reads as more serious, faster as more urgent, and this does more work than any other control.
- Punctuation - a full stop where a comma was changes the weight of a line.
- Voice choice - the labelled tone of the voice sets the register you get; picking a warm voice beats trying to make a clipped one warm.
- Line-level re-rendering - the same text read twice differs slightly, and one of the takes is usually better.
What you cannot get is intent: emphasis on the word that matters, a sarcastic lift, a break in the voice. Record those yourself and convert - it takes one take and sounds like a person, because the performance is one.
